Children's Mural

The future home of The Silver Chair bookstore.

Well, we've been having some excitement. My husband is opening a bookstore called The Silver Chair. They closed on the house they are going to convert into a store yesterday. Yea!

I am going to have a couple jobs in helping open up the store and one I'm planning now is a mural in the children's section of the store. I have a plan to make a "land" with famous children book characters in it. I'm having a rough time deciding on what characters to put in the mural. I sat down for two minutes and came up with 30. Yikes. Help me out and tell me your top 5 or ten picks.

Here are 10 from me:
1. Jack the Giant Killer
2. Rapunzel
3. St. George and the Dragon
4. Rikki Tikki Tavi
5. Mary had a Little Lamb
6. Peter Rabbit
7. Jack Sprat and Wife
8. Ugly Duckling
9. Three Billy Goats Gruff
10. Little Red Riding Hood

Um...you're calling the place The Silver Chair, yet you have no Narnia on your list? I'm not sure I can approve. ;-)

One thing that pops into my mind as I look at your list is the idea of having two columns framing the rest of the scenes, with Jack and his beanstalk "sculpted" on one, and Rapunzel and her tower and tresses on the other. And if you include Jack's giant, you are hereby commanded to use Joffre as the model. ;-)

I'll be excited to see your plans -- both for the mural and for the whole store -- develop. I love the fact that the house is already rather silver looking!

Oh, and I have a special place in my heart for The Princess and the Pea.

I like Three Billy Goats Gruff and Little Red Riding Hood. With the latter, I can imagine the boys at the bookstore being entertained by the wolf and the girls befriending Little Red.

The Wild Things idea is good too.

I hope you have a great time with your mural.

I love all of the characters on Faydra's list, but I think it would be hard to make them really your own rather than just copying Maurice Sendak or Dr. Seuss or whomever.

The problem with doing say a Wild thing or Dr. Seus is that the illustrations are what make those characters recognizable and I don't know the copyright laws.I wanted to do Madeline and Fox in Sox. I'll check it out.
Valerie, I have been trying to decide which character(s) from Narnia to do.

I am excited about doing this. Thanks, everyone. If you have any other ideas keep the comments coming.

Another idea is to do draw just from stories with dragon-slaying themes: St. George fits, as does Rikki Tikki Tavi, and Jack, too, I suppose. Rillian and the serpent would be the obvious Narnia choice. But I guess it would put a damper on the nursery rhyme options.

I really like Corduroy, and there are always those "Golden Books" classics, like the Tawny Scrawny Lion and Scuffy the Tugboat. But again, it's the copyright thing...

Hope you have a fun time doing the mural! Sounds like a great project! (The whole bookstore idea is great. I've always wanted to open a bookstore. We'll pray that it's a success!)

Thanks Alaina. I thought of the Pokey puppy and Scuffy. i still haven't nailed down a concrete list. But I have been given permission to do the entire room if I'd like. The bottom half of the walls will be bookshelves but the top half is mine.

Beth, We'll hopefully be open some time in August. That's if the remodeling goes well. The building is on Poinsett St. near the Greer library and post office before downtown Greer.
